The 5DT High Voltage Yard Training Simulator (VRHV) makes it possible for the trainee High Voltage (HV) yard operator to practice High Voltage Yard Operating Procedures in virtual reality first, before progressing to normal reality-based training. The program utilizes an integrated 3-step training process. The trainee is first accustomed to the circuit diagram of the relevant High Voltage yard by means of a complete interactive on-screen circuit diagram simulation. Isolators and breakers may be opened and closed via mouse button clicks. A High Voltage Operating Safety program runs in the background, checking each operation of the trainee. Once the trainee understands the circuit diagram and basic operating procedures, he/she may proceed to the next level where the isolators and breakers are operated by means of virtual control panels. The final step is the Virtual Reality World where the trainee may walk around in the virtual HV yard and the virtual control room.

The interactive circuit diagram is shown in the background. A virtual control panel is shown in the bottom-right corner, and a view of the virtual yard is shown in the top-right corner. The three training elements function in parallel. Switching may be implemented either with mouseclicks on the interactive circuit diagram, or with virtual button presses on the virtual control panel. When one of the elements are activated, the other elements are updated simultaneously. The trainee can therefore see the total results of his/her actions instantaneously.
The 3 Training Elements
The first step of the 3-step training process is to study the circuit diagram of the relevant high voltage yard. The trainee uses the interactive circuit diagram to perform high voltage yard operating (switching). breakers and isolators may be opened and closed with mouseclicks. The trainee may also earth (ground) isolated sections of the high voltage yard. A detail electrical simulation runs in the background of the interactive circuit diagram. The system immediately presents a warning if the trainee performs an incorrect operation. The system keeps track of the number of correct and incorrect operations performed by the trainee. When the trainee has mastered the operating process on the interactive circuit diagram (symbolic level) he/she may progress to the virtual control panels. A step is therefore taken towards reality.
Interactive Circuit Diagram
Once the trainee has mastered the operating (switching) process on the symbolic level (interactive circuit diagram) he/she progresses towards reality by starting to do the operating on virtual control panels that are similar in function to the real control panels. The trainee has to take the same steps that a real operator would have to take in a real high voltage yard. An example is the warning tags that have to be attached to the control panel (top-right corner).
Virtual Control Panel
Once the trainee has mastered switching by utilising the virtual control panels, he/she can take another step towards reality by starting to perform operating of the yard by means of the virtual control panels in the virtual control room. The trainee uses a baseless joystick (space controller) to navigate his/her way in the virtual control room or in the virtual yard outside the control room.
Virtual Control Room
The final step of the 3-step training process is to navigate the virtual yard and to do switching in the yard. A high detail virtual yard has been constructed for this purpose (more than 1000 circuit elements). The gradual development from training on the symbolic level to training in a yard that closely emulates reality, enables the trainee to make sense of a highly complex and dangerous environment. The image shows the oil reservoir of a high voltage transformer, complete with cooling fans, water detection elements and reservoir level indicators.

In order to enhance the realism of the simulation, some non-perfect elements have been introduced into the virtual world. This image shows oil leaks on a high voltage transformer with the resultant oil spills on the concrete at the base of the transformer.

In order to enhance the realism of the simulation some non-perfect elements have been introduced into the virtual world. This image shows weeds growing in the power yard.
